CLdN and Terberg are pleased to announce the introduction of the first fully electric 4x4 RT253EV Tugmaster into CLdN's RoRo operations. The vehicle will commence service on 29 July 2026 at the Port of Zeebrugge, marking an important milestone in the decarbonisation of roll-on/roll-off terminal operations.
As part of CLdN's ongoing fleet investment programme and decarbonisation strategy, the RT253EV represents the latest step in the company's commitment to reducing emissions while maintaining the highest standards of operational efficiency and reliability.
The deployment of the RT253EV is a significant development for the RoRo industry, where 4x4 electric RoRo tractors are still a new technology. Specifically designed for demanding RoRo ferry operations, the four-wheel drive vehicle offers zero exhaust emissions, significantly reduced noise levels, and improved driver comfort.
The RT253EV also builds on Terberg's extensive experience in electric terminal tractor development, which began in 2014 with the development of its first electric terminal tractor. Having since developed and deployed its third generation of electric terminal tractors, Terberg is leveraging more than a decade of expertise to bring proven electric technology to the RoRo sector.
The RT253EV features an electric, transmission-free drivetrain featuring a regenerative braking system that automatically adapts to the gross cargo weight. This technology improves energy efficiency while reducing brake wear and overall maintenance requirements.
The electric Tugmaster will initially be deployed for the loading and discharging of CLdN's vessels operating on the Zeebrugge – UK routes. During this first phase, it will operate alongside CLdN's existing fleet of diesel Tugmasters.
This introduction will allow CLdN and Terberg to evaluate the performance of electric terminal tractors in a demanding operational environment and gain valuable insights into the future deployment of zero-emission vehicles within RoRo operations.
